Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I schedule an appointment for wireless connectivity on my personal computer/laptop?

    • Open sessions are held the first week of the Fall semester.  See the GBC Wireless Network link for details about our network and requirements to connect to it.  A link is provided to a form for requesting an appointment to have the configuration done on your computer/laptop.

  • Where and how can I view my grades?

    • Students can view their grades by logging into the Campus Web.  Grades for classes which have just completed cannot be viewed in the 'View Final Grade Report' window of the 'Grade Report' section.  To view them, first click on the 'student' tab, next click on 'View Final Grade Report' in the Grade Report section, and then 'Printer Friendly Grade Report' at the bottom of the page.  Once all grades are posted for all of the session classes, the update process will be run which will update the credits and GPA information. At that point, these grades will appear in the ‘View Final Grade Report’ Window and the ‘Printer Friendly Grade Report’ will have updated credit and GPA information.

  • May I bring my own access point or wireless router to Campus?

    • No.  Wireless connectivity is provided by the College.  Access points and wireless routers, which are not part of the College network, would interfere with the GBC Wireless Network and are not permitted on-campus.

  • Why can't I bring my cordless phone?

    • You may have a cordless phone that operates in the 900 MHz band.  Cordless phones that operated in the other bands will cause interference with the College wireless data network.

  • What is my GBC username and password?

    • Your username to E-mail, Blackboard, and  Campus Web are the first six characters of your last name plus the first initial of your first name, i.e. John Jackson - jacksoj.  If your name is common, a number may have been added to your username.  Usernames and password combinations are e-mailed to students prior to the beginning of the session if an e-mail address was provided on the GBC admission application.  If an e-mail address was not provided, they are mailed through the postal service.  Lab assistants in the Academic Computing Center can help students if they have issues with their network accounts.

  • I don't remember my password--How can I get it reset?

    • E-mail passwords automatically lock up once the account has been tried three times incorrectly.  To have it unlocked or reset to your student ID number, call the Academic Computer Center (302-225-6277) or see a lab assistant in the ACC.

    • On Blackboard, a 'Forgot your password?' link is provided within the Blackboard login box. This will e-mail a temporary password to the e-mail listed for the blackboard account. If no change has been made to the e-mail listed, it will be sent to the student's GBC e-mail account.

    • On Campus Web, click the 'I forgot my password' link to have a temporary one sent to the student GBC e-mail account.

  • I am a new student, when do I get my username and password?

    • New student user accounts are created a week prior to each session and e-mailed to the student at the e-mail address provided on the GBC admission application.  If no e-mail address was provided or if the one provided was illegible, the information is mailed through the postal service.

  • I changed by schedule or registered late and my class(es) are not on Blackboard.  Who can add me?

    • Classes are all populated the Friday morning prior to the start of classes.  If a schedule change is made after the initial population of students, the respective faculty member is responsible for adding the student in the class.

  • What are the recommendations for purchasing a computer or laptop?

    • The College does not require students to purchase a computer; however, many parents and students request information on computer configuration recommendations. When purchasing a new computer or laptop, consider the following recommended configuration:

      • Operating System:
        • Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and critical updates or
        • Windows Vista and critical updates
      • Memory: 512 MB to 1 GB RAM or more
      • Processor: 1 GHz or faster
      • Hard drive: 30 GB or larger
      • Wireless Network Card: Integrated 802.11 b/g (for laptops)
      • Anti-Virus software Anti-Spyware software Microsoft Office 2007
  • Does the College have purchase programs with any vendors for discounted computer purchases?

    • GBC does have an arrangement with Dell for students, faculty and staff for purchasing Dell computers.  We provide this link as a service and do not endorse their products or services.

  • What is Copyright?  Do I need to worry about it?

    • Federal laws govern the right to reproduce, publish, and sell original works.

    • Assume any photos, music, movies, software, books, online essays, art work, graphics, or other forms of media, is under copyright unless indicated otherwise.  A copyright statement is not required for an item to be protected under the law.

    • If you didn't create it, you can't download it, share it, or use it without getting permission and/or citing your source.

    • Refer to our copyright page for more information.

  • Where is the Academic Computing Center?

    • The Academic Computing Center is located on the ground floor of the Business Skills Training Pavilion which is connected from the first floor of the Fulmer Center (follow hallway to the left of receptionist's desk).

  • Am I required to use GBC E-mail?

    • While you do not have to send e-mail from your GBC e-mail account, you are required to access it and read e-mail from GBC faculty and staff.  E-mail serves as an official means of sending information to students by faculty and staff.  These messages are sent to the GBC e-mail address.  Please refer to the policies on the required use of the GBC e-mail account.

  • Why do I get 'PAGE NOT FOUND' when I try to open an e-mail message?

    • When an e-mail contains excessive punctuation in the subject line, outlook web will not open the e-mail.  If possible, e-mail or ask the sender to resend the e-mail removing the punctuation from the subject line.  Another solution would be to access the e-mail from outlook express instead of outlook web.  In order to use outlook express, a profile needs to be set up.  Instructions for this are posted on the GBC Blackboard server, 'GBC Community Board' class, under 'Documents', 'Setting up Outlook Express'.

  • How long after I graduate will I have access to my GBC e-mail and the Academic Computing Center?

    • Your e-mail address and student accounts will be removed approximately six-months after you are not currently enrolled.  The computing center is only available for currently enrolled students.
