COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course examines the important concepts and techniques of project management from the perspective of the project manager. This course covers typical topics of managing projects such as planning, scheduling, and monitoring activities, the role of the project manager, selecting projects, budgeting, and allocating resources. Management tools such as CPM, PERT, risk analysis and project crashing will be explored in detail. Students will be exposed to Microsoft Project software  in the computer lab during the week.

HOMEWORK POLICIES

Assignments will be due during the week of January 14th. Due dates and submission instructions will be provided during class. Please note the following policies regarding assignments:

  • The instructor reserves the right to reduce the grade or not accept late assignments out of fairness for the remainder of the class.
  • Late assignments that are submitted without prior approval from the instructor will not be accepted.
  • Hardware or software problems with your own personal computer is not a valid excuse for submitting a late assignment since all students have access to the GBC computer lab.
  • It is the responsibility of all students to back-up computer files in order to avoid problems with disk or flash drive failure.
  • All cases are to be done individually. Copying of computer files or hand-written assignments from one student to another is strictly prohibited. Consequences of such behavior will minimally result in a zero grade for that assignment with no option for a make-up. Depending on the circumstances, more stringent penalties may be assessed.
  • Your homework assignments will be graded not only on their content, but also their appearance. I feel it’s important that you take pride in the work that you submit. It’s a reflection on the effort you have made to complete the assignment.

EXAM POLICIES

I ask that you do not leave the classroom while taking an exam. Leaving the classroom during an exam without permission from the instructor will result in the collection of your paper.

The use of cell phones or PDAs during the exam is strictly prohibited and will result in a zero grade.

I ask that you not wear a hat with a brim during the exam.

I have a “zero tolerance policy” for cheating during exams. Any student caught cheating during an exam will receive an “F” grade for the course.

Students are responsible to bring their own calculators to exams. Under no circumstances are students permitted to share calculators during an exam. Cell phones and PDAs cannot be used as calculators during the exam.

All exams must be taken during the scheduled times. No make-ups will be given except under unusual conditions, as judged by the instructor, and with prior notice. You must contact the instructor either in person, by e–mail or voice-mail before the scheduled exam. If a make-up exam has been arranged with the instructor, please note the following policies:

  • Since the student has more time to prepare for the make-up exam, it will be more challenging than the in-class exam and will be an essay format.
  • The make-up exam will not be curved.
  • The student will schedule a time to take the make-up with the ARC within one week of the scheduled exam.
  • The student will send the instructor an e-mail confirming this time.
  • Failure to take the exam at this time will result in a zero grade.

Students who fail to take a scheduled exam without prior notice are not eligible for a make-up exam and will receive a zero grade for the exam.

RESPECTFUL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

In order to promote and maintain a respectful and effective learning environment, I expect students to adhere to the following policies while in the classroom:

  1. Respect for each and every student is to be demonstrated in all interactions and communications at all times.
  2. Personal, extraneous conversations should not take place during class time.
  3. Students are expected to make every reasonable effort to avoid arriving late for class. If students do arrive late, they are expected to quietly enter the classroom without disturbing the faculty or their fellow students.
  4. No cell phones, headsets, or noise-making beepers or pagers are permitted in operation in the classroom setting.  Exceptions may be granted for individual students when deemed appropriate by the instructor.
  5. Laptops are not to be used during class time unless permission has been granted by the instructor beforehand.
  6. Sleeping during class is not acceptable behavior and will be considered a violation of the Respectful Learning Environment policy.

Failure to adhere to these policies will result in the submission of a violation report form to the college administration.

ACADEMIC HONOR CODE

The Academic Honor Code System at Goldey-Beacom College is designed to promote academic honesty throughout the institution. This Honor Code document describes:

  1. How the College defines academic dishonesty.
  2. The procedures to be followed when a student has been cited for violations for the Academic Honor Code which includes the Respectful Learning Environment and the possible consequences of that action,
  3. The appeal process available to the student,
  4. Sanctions for repeat violations.

It is the responsibility of each and every student to fully understand the Academic Honor Code policy. Copies of this policy can be found on the college web site, the Academic Affairs Office, the Business Office, and the Student Affairs Office. As the Chair of the Academic Honor Code Committee, I take this policy very seriously and will fully enforce any penalties in regard to cheating. For instance, any student observed looking at another student’s work during an exam will receive a zero grade for that exam without exception.

GENERAL POLICIES

My expectations in the classroom are that you will be willing and able to ask questions about any course material that is not clear to you.  I look forward to questions during class time.  It indicates to me that the student is paying attention, has a desire to learn, and is helping his/her fellow students by having the courage to ask a question that others may also have.  To me, questions during class are a key component to the learning process and are always welcome.

I also strongly encourage questions from students outside of class.  Please do not hesitate to take advantage of the office hours that I have scheduled. If these times are not convenient for you, we can schedule an appointment for some other time. I will do my best to make myself available for you outside of the classroom.

All courses taught at Goldey-Beacom College are governed by the GBC Academic Honor Code. Copies of the Academic Honor Code are available in the Financial Aid/Academic Advisement Office, the Student Affairs Office, and the Academic Affairs Office.
