Indirect Object Pronouns

 

  1. The indirect object pronoun represents the noun to whom and for whom, to which and for which, the action is intended.
  2. Yo te doy el libro.

    Yo le compro el libro.

    Yo no le escribo el libro.

    I give the book to him.

    I buy the book for him.

    I don't write the book for him.
    1. The indirect object pronoun le is placed directly before the conjugated verb.
    2. When no is present, it precedes the indirect object pronoun le.

     

  3. All forms of indirect object pronouns.
  4. Juan me da el libro (a mi).
    Juan te da el libro (a ti)
    Juan le da el libro (a él)
    Juan le da el libro (a ella)
    Juan le da el libro (a Vd.)

    Juan nos da el libro (a nosotros).
    Juan les da el libro(a ellos)
    Juan les da el libro (a ellas.)
    Juan les da el libro (a Vds.)

    John gives the book to me
    John gives the book to you (fam. sing.)
    John gives the book to him
    John gives the book to her
    John gives the book to you (formal sing.)

    John gives the book to us
    John gives the book to them (masc..)
    John gives the book to them (fem.)
    John gives the book to you(formal pl.l)

    1. All indirect object pronouns are placed directly before the conjugated verb.
    2. Note all the meanings of le: to him; to her; to you (formal sing.); and of les; to them (masc. / fem.); to you (formal pl.)
    3. A mi, a ti, a él, a ella, a Vd.; a nosotros, a ellos, a ellas, a Vds., are omitted under ordinary circumstances. They are used to emphasize the indirect object pronoun.
    4. El me escribe a mí; no te escribe a ti.
      He writes to me; he does not write to you.
    5. Le (to him, to her, to you formal sing.) is clarified by adding a él, a ella, or a Vd.; les (to them, to you formal pl.) is clarified by adding a ellos, a ellas, a Vds.

     

  5. Indirect object pronouns are attached to the end of AFFIRMATIVE COMMANDS. However, indirect object pronouns are placed before NEGATIVE COMMANDS.
  6. Señorita, ¡escríbale Vd. una carta!
    Miss, write a letter to him!

    ¡No le escriba una tarjeta!
    Don't write a card to him!

    Para escribirle necesito papel.
    In order to write to him I need paper.

    Si Vd. no le quiere escribir,yo voy a escribirle.
    If you do not write him, I will write to him.

    1. The indirect object pronouns are attached to Affirmative Commands like the direct object pronouns. A written accent mark is then placed over the vowel of the syllable that was stressed in speech, frequently the next to last before attachment of the pronoun..
    2. Indirect object pronouns are placed before Negative commands as well as before conjugated verbs, like direct object pronouns.
    3. If an infinitive follows a conjugated verb, the indirect object pronoun may be placed either before the conjugated verb or attached to the end of the infinitive. No accent mark is needed when attaching one object pronoun to the infinitive.

     

  7. The position of object pronouns varies in the presence of a conjugated verb which is followed by an INFINITIVE.
  8. Anita no le quiere hablar.

    Anita no quiere hablarle.

    Anita does not want to speak to him.

    1. If an infinitive follows a conjugated verb, the indirect object pronoun may be placed either before the conjugated verb or attached to the end of the infinitive. No accent mark is needed when attaching one object pronoun to the infinitive.
    2. Indirect object pronouns MUST be attached to the end of the infinitive when no conjugated verb is seen before it.
    3. No accent mark is written when attaching one object pronoun to an infinitive.
