GBC Wireless Network

Currently enrolled students and employees of GBC have access to the GBC wireless network. Access to the wireless network is available from most locations on campus. This includes the interior of all buildings, including the library, lounges, residence halls, and classrooms. Many popular outside locations are also accessible, including the gazebo near the softball field, outside seating areas, etc.

Review the information listed here and then schedule an appointment for having wireless configured on the laptop or desktop by completing the online form.  Appointments will be confirmed with an e-mail.  Be sure that the requirements listed below are met before scheduling an appointment.

Minimum requirements for connecting to the GBC Wireless Network are as follows:

  • Windows XP, with the latest service pack (Service Pack 2) and critical updates or Windows Vista with critical updates
  • Up-to-date anti-virus software
  • Wireless network adapter or integrated wireless with 128-bit encryption
  • If you have another type of device (e.g., Mac, handheld device), please email wireless@gbc.edu to check compatibility.
Using the GBC Wireless Network

  1. Only currently enrolled students and employees of Goldey-Beacom College have access to the GBC wireless network.  Up-to-date antivirus software must be installed on all PCs or laptops connected to the network.
  2. A wireless card or integrated wireless in a laptop with 128-bit encryption is needed.  Cards with only 64 bit encryption will not work on the GBC network.  OIT will not support any product which does not encrypt our wireless code.  Be aware that certain combinations of operating systems, device drivers, and hardware adapters may not connect to our network.  OIT will not be responsible for determining how to configure these devices.
  3. Verify that current Anti-virus software is installed and that the operating system is Windows XP with the latest service packs (Service Pack 2) and critical updates installed.  DO NOT MAKE AN APPOINTMENT IF THESE TWO REQUIREMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN MET.
  4. After completing steps 2 and 3, make an appointment with the OIT by completing the Appointment Request form so that staff can configure the laptop or desktop computer for access to the network.  There is no charge for this service.  All appointments should be scheduled with at least 24 hours notice.  Use the same appointment request form to cancel or reschedule an appointment.  Students, who miss their first scheduled appointment, will be given the opportunity to have their wireless configuration completed one more time.  If the student misses both scheduled appointments, they will not be configured for the wireless network for that semester.
  5. The wireless encryption code is changed annually the first week of the Fall semester.
  6. Use of the GBC wireless network is subject to all existing College policies for Responsible Computing and Use of College Resources; it is to be used only for activity related to the educational mission of the College. The details of this policy can be found on the GBC website, www.gbc.edu/acc/policies.html
  7. Abuse of the network may result in loss of wireless access privileges and revocation of the GBC network account.
  8. If you encounter difficulties, please complete the Appointment Request form and note the problem under the comments section.

Note:  The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at GBC does not provide technical support for personally owned computers.
