Did you recently complete a 2026-27 FAFSA and notice you have a negative SAI? Perhaps you feel like you made a mistake. You may even have ruined your chances of receiving federal student aid that you rely on to finance your education. Fortunately for you, you did nothing wrong. Negative SAI is normal (to an extent).

A few FAFSA cycles ago, the lowest contribution figures a student could receive on FAFSA were 0. A 0 EFC meant the student displayed the highest financial need, which correlated to a maximum Pell Grant award. With the recent changes to the FAFSA process and terminology, a student can receive an SAI as low as negative 1,500. So, if you see a -1,500 on your Student Aid Report summary, you display the highest financial need.

In fact, SAI calculations of 0 or below (down to -1,500) qualify you for a maximum Pell Grant award. A student receiving an SAI of 0 and another receiving an SAI of -1,500 receives the same Pell Grant award value. Some institutions may use the different SAI figures to determine a student’s eligibility for institutional aid. The negative SAI is beneficial in identifying exceptionally needy students.

Financial aid administrators can look at a negative SAI and find alternative funding sources to supplement a student’s maximum Pell Grant award. One award type available is supplemental grants, like FSEOG, which can only go to a Pell Grant recipient. Larger institutions often offer their own form of need-based aid, and those schools may treat a negative SAI much differently than a student with a 0 SAI.

Using information from the FAFSA form, including income, assets, and family size, the federal methodology assigns an SAI figure. Federal methodology accounts for different situations to determine if a student has an ultra-low SAI number. Low-income households, especially those significantly below the federal poverty line, are more likely to receive a negative SAI and maximum Pell Grant award.

So, don’t freak out the next time you see a negative SAI. If you discover your Student Aid Report cannot calculate an SAI figure, it’s time to call the Financial Aid Office to inquire about your FAFSA application.
