Goldey-Beacom College Grateful for Community Response

Wilmington, DE – On the heels of Goldey-Beacom College incoming freshman student-athlete Ty’Shawn Ewings experiencing a devastating loss of his belongings, he says, “Goldey-Beacom College is not just a community, it’s a family.”

On the evening of August 18, Ty’Shawn and his mother stayed at a local hotel on their trip to Move-In Day at the College. Early the next morning, he and his mother were alerted by hotel staff that their car was broken into. Everything he needed to start what should be the most exciting part of an 18-year-old’s life, was brought to a disappointing halt when they encountered a smashed car window and the theft of all his belongings.

First the Admissions office at the College was notified, then Ty’Shawn’s coach was notified; eventually the Student Affairs staff was notified, and soon the whole College community knew of the situation and in true Goldey-Beacom fashion, the College jumped into action, including 6 ABC News. The lead for helping was set by Ty’Shawn’s family, who started a GoFundMe page to help the family financially. The College community stepped in to help with food, with clothing and with getting the word out.

GBC President Colleen Perry Keith said, “Stepping in to help is in GBC’s DNA: it’s just what we do.” The College currently has a fund to help students with emergency needs, and anyone is welcome to make gifts to this fund: GBC Students in Need Fund.

“Your gifts to the Ewings’ GoFundMe or your gifts to the GBC fund will help someone with their emergency need,” said Dr. Keith, as she smiled and added, “Ty’Shawn said it best – ‘It’s not just a community, it’s a family.’”

“I am awe-struck by the outpouring of support from the GBC staff, alumni and new friends who are giving out of the goodness of their hearts,” Dr. Keith continued. “People from all over are sharing their generosity.”

As Dr. Keith thought about her role as president, she said, “For me, the line between College President and Mom is hopelessly blurred and I think that same blurring happens for all of us at Goldey-Beacom. We know what kind of help we’d love for our own loved ones to receive, and we act out of that. Add to the situation that small colleges often have a family feel, and the response is truly not as unusual as many would think. It’s who and what we are.”

Goldey-Beacom College is all about family. And family helps family. GBC has many students who come to campus needing some of the essentials to start their college experience. We always have students who have emergency needs because in everyone’s life, ‘life happens.’”
