Helping Students Cope: Goldey-Beacom College and Crisis Text Line Join Forces for Back-to-School Support

Wilmington, DE – It’s no surprise that during back-to-school season there’s a spike in stress. That’s why Goldey-Beacom College (GBC) and Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit organization that provides free, 24/7, confidential text-based mental health support, have partnered to help students, faculty and staff navigate the unique challenges of the back-to-school season.

“Goldey-Beacom College is deeply committed to supporting the whole student, not just their academic success but also their mental and emotional well-being,” said Dr. Colleen Perry Keith, President of Goldey-Beacom College. “Our partnership with Crisis Text Line ensures that members of our community have immediate, confidential support at their fingertips—whenever and wherever they need it. We want our students to know they are never alone, and that their health and well-being are central to their success at GBC and beyond.”

Research from Crisis Text Line shows that 30% of texters aged 18–24 discuss school-related stress with common concerns including financial pressures, balancing jobs, academic performance and mental health diagnoses. These conversations surge each year as students return to school, making immediate, accessible support more critical than ever.

GBC Director of the Mental Health and Wellness Center Megan Romano explained, “The beauty of the Crisis Text Line is that support is available right at a student’s fingertips. Whether it’s a late-night worry, academic stress, or personal challenge, our students can reach out and receive trained, empathetic guidance immediately, which helps them feel seen, heard, and supported without delay.”

“Crisis Text Line is ready to support Goldey-Beacom College students with whatever the semester brings,” said Jana French, Community Partnerships Director at Crisis Text Line. “We’ve trained more than 85,000 volunteer Crisis Counselors, many of them college students themselves, who bring texters from a hot moment to a cool calm through empathy, active listening and empowering texters to use their own strengths and coping strategies.

Crisis Text Line’s model is designed to meet people where they are, offering confidential support via text, web chat and WhatsApp in both English and Spanish. Its triage algorithm prioritizes texters at highest risk, ensuring those in imminent crisis are supported first – much like a mental health emergency room.
