Summer isn’t just a break between semesters—it’s a valuable window for students to get ahead or catch up academically while making strategic use of their financial aid. For many, the summer term offers smaller class sizes, lighter schedules, and opportunities to reduce long-term costs. By understanding how financial aid can apply to summer enrollment, students can use this time to make meaningful progress toward their degree, stay on track for graduation, or even graduate early.

1. Enroll in Summer Courses Using Remaining Pell Grant Eligibility

Pell Grant recipients may qualify for “Year-Round Pell,” which allows them to receive up to an additional 50% of their annual Pell award to cover summer tuition charges. This term means that even if a student used their allotted Pell funds in the fall and spring, they may still have grant funding available for summer. This scenario is beneficial for students who need to catch up on credits, maintain momentum, or speed up completion without paying the full amount out of pocket. Since Pell Grant funding does not need to be repaid, using it to take extra classes during the summer can be one of the most cost-effective ways to do so.

2. Use Summer Loans (Subsidized, Unsubsidized, or PLUS)

Federal student loans can also be applied toward summer tuition and fees, as long as students maintain enrollment in at least six credits (2 courses). If you did not accept your full loan eligibility in fall and/or spring, those remaining funds are still available to help offset some of your outstanding summer charges. If approved for a maximum Parent PLUS loan, you can always request an increase in the loan amount to cover this additional semester of charges!

3. Utilize Our Summer Payment Plan

For students who prefer to avoid additional borrowing, our summer payment plan can make tuition more manageable. This plan divides the cost of your summer enrollment into three monthly payments, with no additional fees or interest assessed. This payment plan can provide a more affordable pathway for students who want to stay on track academically without incurring new debt. It’s also an excellent option for students who wish to ease back into coursework with a light summer schedule.

4. Use Aid to lighten Your Fall or Spring Course Load

Summer enrollment can significantly reduce the pressure students feel during the main academic year. By completing one or two courses in the summer, students can free up space in their fall or spring schedules, allowing them more time for internships, work, extracurricular activities, or challenging courses. This reduction in credit hours during the regular academic year can improve academic performance and overall well-being, especially for students balancing school with employment or other responsibilities. Using financial aid strategically in the summer can create a more manageable and successful year ahead.

5. Complete Prerequisites or High-Demand Courses

Some GBC programs have prerequisite courses or high-demand courses that fill up quickly during the fall and spring semesters. Taking these courses in the summer not only helps students avoid scheduling conflicts in the fall and spring but also reduces the risk of delays in their academic plan. Using your financial aid to take these courses in the summer ensures you remain on track for timely progression through your major, senior-year courses, or program-specific pathways that require courses with prerequisites.

6. Accelerate Graduation to Save on Long-Term Costs

Every semester a student spends in school has a cost—tuition, living expenses, textbooks and supplies, and, of course, time. By using financial aid to take summer classes, students can shave off a semester or even a full year from their degree timeline. Graduating early reduces borrowing, minimizes interest accrual, and allows students to enter the workforce sooner. For students aiming to save money, reduce debt, or transition more quickly into their career, summer can be one of the most financially strategic times to enroll.

Taking advantage of financial aid during the summer can open doors for students who want to stay on track, get ahead, or reduce future costs. Whether they’re using remaining Pell Grant funding, tapping into unused loan eligibility, or simply spreading out their coursework, summer enrollment can be a powerful tool for academic and financial success. With thoughtful planning and an understanding of how aid works in the summer term, students can make meaningful progress toward their degree while keeping their long-term goals—and budgets—in mind.
