Finding the right resource to compare colleges is difficult. Although the abundance of free resources on the internet is useful in the college search, it can also feel like a giant headache to discern what’s factual. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) offers a website called College Navigator that aggregates college data for students and their families to review in a simple format.
To search for a school, simply put its name in the editable search box. You can also narrow your search results down to states and zip code if you are researching schools in a specific region or locality. You can also filter results by the level of awards offered at an institution and the institution type. Goldey-Beacom’s landing page on College Navigator will look like this:
The yellow box at the top is an informational box that contains key characteristics and descriptions of Goldey-Beacom College. The collapsible blue information boxes offer a variety of information for different audiences. For example, students seeking basic information about the institution should review the “General Information” box. General Information provides relevant information about Goldey-Beacom, including our main webpage and faculty data.
The next three collapsible boxes are all about tuition and fees, and financial aid offerings at the College. Prospective students who need clarity on the College’s costs and typical financial aid packages should browse these boxes to learn more.
Curious about enrollment and admissions data at the College? College Navigator has that covered, too.
Choosing a college to attend is a momentous decision. You want to be sure you selected the right school. Take time to review a school’s retention and outcome measures, which are good indicators of a school’s ability to graduate within the time needed for you to earn a credential or degree. Please note that these sections focus only on undergraduate students.
The final sections of College Navigator highlight extracurricular activities available in athletics. Veterans can view the College’s enrollment of servicemembers and see how many students are taking advantage of their Veterans Affairs and military benefits. Accreditation is always on the minds of students and parents, as it is confirmation of a school’s ability to deliver educational programming in accordance with recognized standards of quality. Only accredited schools can administer Title IV Aid and state aid programs. All students have a right to know about campus safety. College Navigator provided detailed information about Goldey-Beacom’s crime data over three years. Students concerned about safety and the campus’s security should review this section. Finally, federal student loan borrowers should be aware of the College’s cohort default rates. The Department of Education monitors the College’s default rates among cohorts of federal student loan borrowers. A school with an excessively high cohort default rate indicates that graduates are unable to pay back their federal student loans after graduation. Knowing this information can make all the difference in attending a high-quality institution of learning or a school that does not deliver on its outcome promises.
Have fun reviewing College Navigator. It is one of my favorite tools to use when chatting with a student or parent about Goldey-Beacom (or any school, for that matter)!
