Dr. Scott Glenn’s Classroom Philosophy: Preparation, Perseverance and Purpose

At Goldey-Beacom College, students often describe their most meaningful academic experiences through the faculty who challenged them, encouraged them and helped them see themselves differently. For many students, Dr. Scott Glenn is one of those faculty members.

An Assistant Professor of Business, Faculty Athletic Representative, Institutional Review Board Chair and co-chair of the Faculty Senate, Dr. Glenn has built a career around service, leadership and student development. His work at GBC extends beyond a single classroom or title. He is a connector, a mentor and a steady advocate for students as they prepare not only for careers, but for the challenges and opportunities that come with life after college.

Dr. Glenn brings a wide range of professional and personal experience to his role. Before his work in higher education, he taught and coached in the tri-state area, including time at Albright College, Kutztown University, Pottstown High School and Unionville-Chadds Ford. He is also a United States Marine, an experience that helped shape his emphasis on adaptability, discipline and preparation.

Those values are central to how he teaches.

“I like to teach in progression,” Dr. Glenn explains. His approach recognizes that students enter the classroom with different backgrounds, learning styles, strengths and needs. Rather than assuming one method works for everyone, he creates multiple ways for students to engage with the material, demonstrate understanding and build confidence.

For Dr. Glenn, teaching is not about simply delivering information. It is about making the subject matter relevant, practical and connected to the real world. He wants students to see how what they are learning applies beyond an assignment, exam or course requirement.

“It’s not about me and what I know,” he says. “It’s about how attractive I can make this learning subject matter and implement it in a real-world situation that they can relate to.”

That philosophy is one reason students often point to his classes as turning points in their college experience. Dr. Glenn is intentional about helping students understand not only the course content, but also themselves. He encourages students to identify their strengths, acknowledge their weaknesses and use both as part of their growth.

His advice is clear: follow your passion, know yourself and prepare for opportunity.

“I don’t believe in potential,” Dr. Glenn says. “Either you are, or you’re not, or you’re preparing to be. Potential is just a word. Preparation is what matters.”

That focus on preparation also shapes his work with GBC student-athletes. As Faculty Athletic Representative, Dr. Glenn serves as a bridge between student-athletes, faculty, athletics and administration. His role includes communication, compliance, advocacy and student welfare. But at the heart of it is a larger belief: students need support as whole people.

He emphasizes accountability, communication and emotional intelligence as essential tools for success. Whether students are balancing athletics and academics, working through a challenging class or preparing for a career, Dr. Glenn believes they need to understand themselves and others.

That belief carries into the classroom through team-based learning, capstone projects, discussion, reflection and repetition. Dr. Glenn sees collaboration as a vital part of education. Students learn not only from him, but from one another. They practice communication, leadership and problem-solving in ways that prepare them for the workplace.

He often reminds students that mistakes are not failures. They are part of learning.

That mindset reflects the kind of environment Dr. Glenn works to create: one where students are pushed, but supported; challenged, but encouraged; expected to grow, but never expected to do it alone.

His impact can also be seen beyond the classroom. Dr. Glenn has helped guide students through opportunities such as the Global Solutions Sustainability Challenge, where GBC students earned second place behind Kansas State University and ahead of Indiana University. For Dr. Glenn, experiences like these show what students can accomplish when they are prepared, supported and given the chance to apply their learning in meaningful ways.

At GBC, Dr. Glenn’s contributions reflect the College’s commitment to helping students become career-ready, community-minded and confident in their ability to lead. His work reminds students that success is not built in a single moment. It is developed through preparation, perseverance, self-awareness and the willingness to keep learning.

For the students who have taken his classes, worked with him as student-athletes or been guided by his mentorship, Dr. Glenn’s influence often lasts well beyond the semester. He helps students see what they are capable of, then gives them the tools to keep moving forward.
