Wilmington, DE – Goldey-Beacom College (GBC) held its 136th Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 5, 2023, on the GBC campus in one ceremony with undergraduate students commencing first, followed by graduate and doctoral students next. A combined total of 365 students received degrees.
Dorrell Green, superintendent of Red Clay Consolidated School District delivered the commencement address to students, family, friends, faculty and staff.
Mr. Green addressed the class of 2023 saying, “Graduates, you should be proud of your achievement but recognize your journey is only beginning. Your degree solidifies your membership in this small private college in Pike Creek, with its storied history that traces its origins to September 1, 1886, when H.S. Goldey opened Wilmington Commercial College with only five students. Like the distinguished alumni that have gone before you here at GBC, there is an expectation to “Lead”! Serve as leaders in your organizations, communities, state and globally as GBC graduates represent over 45 nations. Class of 2023, your network is global, and you can shape the present and the future.”
Green currently serves as superintendent of the Red Clay Consolidated School District, the state’s largest public/charter school system, serving 16,000 students and home to 30 outstanding schools and programs. He has been a member of the GBC Board of Trustees since 2021.
Green earned his degree in elementary teaching education from the University of Delaware
(UD) in 1998 and his master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from UD in 2004. He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Education degree in Organizational Leadership from Wilmington University.
Goldey-Beacom College President Colleen Perry Keith concluded the days’ ceremonies by offering a few words of wisdom to students. “You have earned this accomplishment while navigating a new world. Yours has been a challenging experience with the changes you experienced due to the pandemic. That you managed those changes and earned your degree demonstrates to all of us that you have the skills, abilities, knowledge and determination to succeed. Now is your chance to fly high having proven to yourself and those around you that you can achieve even greater.”
