Amanda Birch is a seasoned academic advisor who organizes one of the most anticipated events during the academic year: registration week. Her dedication to this event is evident through its overall success in promoting course registration to undergraduate and graduate students during pivotal moments in the fall and spring semesters.

Amanda carefully details how the event evolved from the front lobby of the Joseph West Jones Center to a full-blown production in the common area adjacent to the Dining Hall. Each semester, registration week offers enticing prizes to students who register for classes in a future enrollment period. A $250 cash grand prize drawing is likely to attract many students.

Amanda spoke with the Financial Aid Office last month to discuss registration week, the importance of squaring away classes before departing for summer break, and general advice on the new general education curriculum that will be in effect starting in the 2026-27 academic year. Consider this edited version of the conversation a sneak peek into the fun of registration week.

Financial Aid Office: In a gist, what is Registration Week?

Amanda Birch: Registration Week takes place twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. During registration week, students can meet with their advisor in the Jones Student Lounge to get scheduled for the upcoming semester. Staff from the Registrar’s Office, Business Office, Financial Aid, and Graduate Admissions are also available to answer questions on the spot.

Registration Week is invaluable because it’s a one-stop opportunity to complete the registration process, get questions answered, resolve issues quickly, and make sure you’re on track academically and financially before the next semester begins. Plus, students can enter for a grand-prize cash giveaway and enjoy other fun incentives for attending.

How has Registration Week evolved since its inception?

Registration Week first took place in the Jones Lobby, with students scheduled by degree level—seniors on Monday, juniors on Tuesday, sophomores on Wednesday, and first-year students on Thursday and Friday. At first, it took some extra effort to encourage students to attend. Since launching in 2021, however, Registration Week has become a well-established and highly anticipated part of the semester. Students now see it as a helpful, welcoming way to connect with advisors, address scheduling needs, and feel confident and prepared for the upcoming term.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of Registration Week?

The most enjoyable part of Registration Week is connecting with students in person and helping them in real time. Being able to answer questions, resolve concerns on the spot, and see students leave feeling confident and prepared for the next semester makes it rewarding for both staff and students. Being in an open, friendly space with colleagues also adds to the fun, allowing staff to collaborate and share the excitement of the week.

Any fun prizes or themes at this semester’s Registration Week?

This spring, Registration Week will have a board game theme. In addition to our usual $250 cash grand prize, students can also enjoy giveaways such as snacks, stickers, and T-shirts. There’s also a chance to challenge Dr. Joel Worden, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, in a game for the chance to win $5.

What recommendations do you have for students who are nervous about the new gen ed curriculum?

If you’re feeling nervous about the new gen ed curriculum, stop by and chat with either the Registrar’s Office or your advisor. We’re happy to answer questions, guide you through the process, and help you feel ready for the next semester.

Where is this semester’s Registration Week event, and what are the operating hours?

Registration Week will be held in its usual location, the Jones Student Lounge, from Monday, March 23, through Thursday, March 26. We’ll be available each day from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, then closed for lunch from 12 to 1 p.m., and reopening from 1 to 4 p.m. The grand prize drawing will take place on Thursday, March 26, at 4 p.m., and you must be present to win.

What happens if I miss Registration Week?

If you can’t attend Registration Week, be sure to schedule time with your advisor to plan your classes for the next semester. The Advising Office is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We love meeting with students, so stop by even if you miss the event. Just remember to keep an eye on deadlines for late registration fees.

How important is it to register for fall classes before summer break?

It’s imperative to register for fall classes before summer arrives. Registering early gives you the best pick of classes and times, so your schedule works the way you want. You’ll also have plenty of time to finalize your financial aid and submit your housing application. On top of that, scheduling early helps you avoid late fees. Taking care of everything before summer makes the start of the fall semester much smoother and less stressful.

Thanks, Amanda.
