Goldey-Beacom College has been around long enough to collect a few good stories. The College traces its history to 1886, when H.S. Goldey opened the Wilmington Commercial College with just five students. Goldey College and Beacom College spent decades as competitors before merging in 1951, and GBC moved to its current Pike Creek campus in 1974. The Lightning came later. Goldey-Beacom adopted the Lightning nickname during the 1998-99 academic year, and once your teams are called the Lightning, there is one fairly obvious direction to go with a mascot: a giant lightning bolt.
Today, that job belongs to Strike, a familiar face at athletic events, campus celebrations, Homecoming, and just about any occasion improved by an enormous blue-and-gold mascot. But Strike wasn’t always the Bolt getting the photos. Before Strike, there was Bolty, and sometime after 2014, Bolty disappeared. There was no retirement announcement, no farewell ceremony, and no documented explanation that we could find.
So, more than a decade later, one question remains: Whatever happened to Bolty?
Bolty’s story begins with a comeback. An archived GBC Athletics article confirms that a Lightning Bolt mascot costume already existed by 2011, but it had spent the previous several years in storage. On March 6, 2011, the Bolt returned for the women’s basketball team’s Selection Sunday celebration, then traveled to Waltham, Massachusetts, as the Lightning competed in the NCAA East Region Tournament. The return apparently went well, because GBC Athletics decided the Bolt should become a regular presence at Lightning sporting events.
Somewhere along the way, the Bolt became known as Bolty. It was a fitting name for a school whose teams are the Lightning and whose students have come to call themselves Bolts. Bolty became part of the atmosphere at games and campus events, posing for photos, cheering from the sidelines, and doing the essential mascot work of making group pictures much harder to ignore.
Bolty continued appearing around campus for the next few years, but after 2014, the trail gets harder to follow. Deep in the GBC archives, Homecoming 2014 contains the last confirmed photos of Bolty that we could identify. After that, things get quiet. There doesn’t appear to be a formal retirement announcement or farewell explaining what happened next. Maybe the answer is completely ordinary. Mascots change, costumes wear out, traditions evolve, and not every campus decision earns a permanent spot in the archives.
Still, there is something suspicious about a mascot happily posing for Homecoming pictures and then simply vanishing from the historical record, especially because another name was about to enter the story.
Homecoming 2014 is also the first time the new mascot made an appearance. Taller, with a gladiator-like fashion sense, this mascot brought a stronger, athletic aura to the teams. In 2015, GBC held a “Name the Mascot Contest,” the result was announced: Strike. That tells us how Strike enters the scene, but it doesn’t explain exactly what happened to Bolty. Strike, of course, went on to become the mascot newer generations of GBC students and alumni know today. He has represented the Lightning at athletic events, campus celebrations, and community appearances beyond GBC.
We know Bolty was around in 2014. We know Strike was named in 2015. What happened in between is much less clear.
Was Bolty retired, renamed, replaced, or did something else happen entirely? The archives don’t say. That leaves us with a confirmed mascot, a last-known sighting, a new name, and one very convenient gap in the timeline.
Bolty and Strike may be a small piece of GBC history, but that’s part of what makes the story fun. Ask an alum about the mascot they remember, and chances are the conversation won’t stay focused on the mascot for long. It becomes a story about a Homecoming weekend, a basketball game, a group of friends, or some other moment when a giant Lightning Bolt just happened to be standing nearby. For alumni from the early 2010s, Bolty may be part of those memories. For current students and more recent graduates, that role belongs to Strike. Those little pieces of campus life have a way of becoming history before anyone realizes it. Sometimes all it takes to rediscover one is an old photo, an archived athletics page, and a suspicious lack of mascot retirement paperwork.
Strike is still very much on the job. As for Bolty, we’re not closing the file just yet. If you’re at Homecoming, keep your eyes open and maybe keep your camera ready.
