This course examines the legal environment established by the United States Constitution, including relations between state and federal government and the separation of power between branches of the federal government. The course also examines specific issues related to due process and judicial review, equal protection under the law, and individual rights.

This course examines the role of the court systems in adjudicating family issues encountered by human services professionals. Topics include marriage and divorce, child custody and support, alimony, and domestic violence. Students will become familiar with various legal and extra-legal means of resolving disputes that arise in domestic relations.

Prerequisite: CJ 150 Introduction to Criminal Justice; HS 160 Introduction to Human Services, LAW 302 Criminal Law.

Sources of law examined include treaties, executive agreements, and customs; stakeholders include states, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations; jurisdictional issues include the role of tribunals, arbitration systems, and the International Court of Justice. Specific focus is placed on the role of international law in the United States, and the use of force among states.

This course examines the legal and ethical environment arising from the use of the Internet and other interactive communication technologies. The course reviews legal frameworks that are evolving for arbitrating issues involving copyright, intellectual property, privacy, free speech, and contracts. In addition, the course highlights ethical issues in the use of computer systems.
